To Model Or Not... That Is The Question
When I first started 3d modeling, I could only design basic stuff. And like most modelers, I loved what I seen online that could be downloaded, which I did! But after a while, I really wanted to start learning to model on my own. With that being said, should a 3d modeler download models online or should he make his own?
PROS & CONS OF DOWNLOADING 3D MODELS
For beginners, downloading 3d models is great, not only for projects you create, but also a great way to learn how some models are built. Seeing what others have done is a great way to inspire yourself. However, the problem with downloading models is that if you use them in projects that go public, you may be infringing on someone elses copyrighted work.
PROS & CONS OF MAKING YOUR OWN 3D MODELS
By far, the best way to become a 3D modeler is to create your own models. Most hi-end animation studios create all their assets in-house. Creating your own 3d models gives you the satisfaction of knowing you built the models and are not using others. The only downside for small-time or amateur modelers, is that building your own models can take a lot of time. And for motion graphic artist who use 3D in advertisements, sometimes it is quicker to download an already made model; and that is okay as long as you are not infringing on copyrighted work.
As we stated earlier, it is always best to create your own models, especially if it will be seen by the public where copyright comes into play. But, for you small-time modlers, downloading is a good way to do projects quickly and less expensively if you are on a tight budget.
